We want to share an important update regarding overtime pay and federal taxes.
Starting in 2025, a new federal rule allows employees to potentially deduct part of their overtime pay on their federal tax return.
This change does not affect how overtime is paid.
What this means for you:
Overtime pay is not changing. You will still be paid time and a half for hours worked over 40 in a week.
The premium portion of overtime (the “half” in time and a half) may be deductible on your federal taxes when you file your return.
This could result in you keeping more of your overtime earnings after taxes.
This applies to federal taxes only and does not impact state taxes.
Overtime will NOT be broken out separately on your 2025 W-2.
To determine your total overtime earnings for the 2025 year, you will need to reference your final pay stub of the year, which shows year-to-date totals. You can find this in paylocity. Overtime will be split out on your 2026 W-2.
Payroll withholding during the year will remain the same.
This rule is currently scheduled to apply from 2025 through 2028. As more details are released, we will continue to share updates.
If you have questions, please reach out to your tax advisor/CPA.
